Aquaculture

aquaculture tanks

Global production of fish and seafood has quadrupled over the past 50 years. Since 2012, aquaculture has produced more seafood for human consumption than the wild catch from all the world’s oceans combined. Also since 2012, world aquaculture production has surpassed world beef production; We now produce millions of metric tonnes more seafood than beef on an annual basis. Few Texans realize that Texas is a powerhouse in the U.S. aquaculture production sector. Texas is number one in the nation hybrid striped bass, red drum (aka redfish), and marine shrimp production, number two in crawfish production, and number four in catfish production. It has a diverse aquaculture industry including sportfish, baitfish, tilapia, oyster, and marine algae production and home to one of only two freshwater prawn hatcheries in the U.S. as well.
